How viable is a Mini-ATX PC for gaming?

I'm looking to build a gaming PC and I dont want a machine that will take up my whole desk. Will a Mini ATX build be just as effective as a regular ATX build? I need a PC that is reasonable to be a little mobile when needed, like taking over to a friends.

i think you are confusing two different standards.

there is "micro-ATX" and "mini-ITX"

mitx is the smallest but has a few limiting factors such as only being able to support 1 graphics card, less fans and drives. also to my knowledge amd doesnt have a decent mitx board for their fx cpus.

matx is bigger so will require a bigger case but has more options and is amd friendly.

it is certainly possible to build a micro sized pc with full power! check out the image below

i recently specced a pc for someone (not the photo above, just similar) who uses an intel i5, 8gb ram and a gtx970 inside the 250d mini-itx case and it performs great...

the size of the board is mostly irrelevant. you can build using ATX, mATX, or ITX. there's not as many options in ITX but if you find what you need, then the other boards don't matter. as long as you're ok using 1-3 hard drives and 1 graphics card, an ITX can be very nice and obviously even smaller than mATX.

my work/game computer is an ITX with i3-4130 and GTX760, an SSD and a 2TB HDD. very compact.

matx is not as small, runs a bit cheaper and supports more options though you will be looking at a mid sized case which may be larger than what you wanted.

generally mitx can use sff or mini cases while matx needs mid tower (though some mini towers do fit it)

You'd be surprised at what fits into micro ATX and mini ITX builds these days. Most micro systems can support SLI and full size power supplies, and most ITX systems can support full size port supplies and graphics cards. I've been looking at doing a mITX build for my next system based around either the In Win 901 or the Silverstone RVZ02B.
