First time building a Gaming PC, help, please?

I am planning on using an
Intel Core i5-4690 with a GTX 970, if I won't be overclocking do I still need a CPU cooler, or how does that work? I am new at this so sorry if the answer should be obvious.

Ah I see, another question, if I don't overclock will I still get a great gaming experience with the parts I chose? I have been seeing so much on overclocking, I want to make sure what I chose won't be a waste of money. I play games such as COD, and Assassin's creed on console, if that gives you an idea of what I would be playing.
