So guys,

I was writing a forum post using IE11 on Win 8.1, and all of a suddent the message popped up 'Internet Explorer has stopped working'. I though crap and closed IE, and gave it no thought.

When I came back to my PC I realised that IE won't even launch now, it just crashes and says 'Internet Explorer has stopped working'.

I've tried everything to fix this issue this morning, I've disabled and re-enabled IE, I've cleared all the browser history and cookies, tried running IE with no addons, tried with just software rendering, tried resetting to defaults, even a virus check and nothing seems to work.

I really don't understand how IE can go from functioning to non-functioning while I was using it. Does anyone else have any ideas on how I can fix this?

I would run an antimalware called combofix - it is more comprehensive and can fix more issues

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/dl/12/

Click the exe and it will auto scan your computer - should take no more than 10 minutes

My IE does it all day long- it crashes when it likes several times a day, 7 days a week. When go in Tools/ About Internet Explorer, it says, that the latest version supposed to be 11.0.16, and this is not the version it says- I have. It supposed to automatically update itself but it never does. See if you can figure out how to make this thing update itself, as regular updates do not touch it. I am also thinking- the issue may be related to the Java or Flash. You can try to uninstall all Java versions and install new. Flash is hard as it not installed traditionally in Win 8- it is built in, so if you go to the Flash site, it can run a test and see if it works. My IE acts out when or after I use Facebook or Yahoo mail. I also have many videos crashing, which makes me think about Flash.

The same thing happened to me at around the same time. I went to directly into the Internet Explorer folder in C: Program Files. There I right clicked iexplore and went to Properties. There is a tab for previous versions. I picked one from a couple of months ago and clicked restore. That seemed to do the trick for now. It turns out that a Norton update that did me and many others in. See the following http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/02/21/norton_antivirus_update_kills_internet_explorer/ for more details. The article mentions how the get Norton the run the patch (by right clicking the Norton icon in the bottom right and selecting Run LiveUpdate). I hope this helps.
