A 290 is that a joke? I want at least a 760 or higher, I am on a budget by the way, so I can''t go full out titan but I don't want an entry level 290

Can you show me this 290, because I think we're talking about different stuff here

Ah radeon, I thought that was my mistake, hold on I'll give it a good read over

Update: It doesn't justify $500 especially when nvidia's 760 has a higher clock speed at $300

I've seen them around 300:

These are supposedly the most awesome 290s

Wow I already clarified that it was Radeon I thought he meant a gtx 290 (if they even exist)

We're assuming you've already got your answer, the 680 is faster than the 760. Refer to the chart if you want to see what cards are at what level, and if the difference between your card and the other is not more than 3 tiers, then don't need to upgrade.
Graphics card performance hierarchy chart

E.g. if you have a GTX 550Ti now, then you shouldn't upgrade unless the card is 750Ti or better.
Assuming you have HD4000, you need to look at a GT 730 or better atleast, so a 680 would be a good performance jump.
If you have a good enough power supply, you could go for the r9 290/290x which is a further tier up in performance.

I'm going from nothing (integrated graphics) to gtx 760 probably, it's a really cheap option compared to everything else. 680's are also hella expensive, it's better but not that much better than a 760, but a 760 is more power efficient which is important to me. I'm not going radeon, they're unreliable, they die quicker, they're louder and drivers suck compared to nvidias.

Are the stock coolers really loud? I'm using intel stock fans how much noise do they make?

I was referring to the video cards with the reference coolers, they tend to be louder than the specialty versions of the cards (Asus = DirectCU, Gigabyte is usually Wind Force, Saphire is Tri-x or Toxic usually etc). They use coolers designed to be much quieter than the design supplied by AMD or Nvidia.

AMD and Nvidia send out their boards like this:

Build a functioning video card without a lot of fancy stuff, they make sure it's designed decently and that it works. They don't go nuts making it fancy or that it overclocks by X amount.

They put a cooler on it that does the job, but they really don't care about noise levels, more of the effectivness of the cooler and cost. They make sure it is decent but don't put any effort into making it the best.

This is their "reference" design that they send to their partners. Something that the partners can refer to when they customize and modify it. Those parners usually then put better power delivery systems (for OCing) and better cooling on it (for Ocing). Sometimes these partners will focus on cutting the price and put a cheaper cooler on or redo other things to make a more value oriented card.

Intel also makes sure their coolers are "good enough" as far as function, they don't worry if it's quiet or not.

Yes, the larger 120mm coolers are generally quieter than the stock intel coolers for a variety of reasons. One simple reason is that with a larger fan, it can turn more slowly; this "slowness" lowers the noise, it's also a lower pitched noise. In general the lower pitched noises sound quieter even IF they are the same loudness due to the way human hearing works. We tend to be very focused at hearing pitches in the same range as the human vocal range and less focused above and below that.

Anyways bigger fans on higher end stuff are generally less noticeable for most people. I run the Asus series of DirectCU stuff and don't even notice it at load. I have 140 mm case fans and they make a low sound of just the air moving. Also, my 120mm CPU cooler doesn't make any noise to me at all over the case fans and such. it's right next to me.

It also helps to run a quiet case. I built my computer specifically for quiet because I wanted more power, but loved the silence of my Imac.

Literally choked on my saliva laughing the moment i read that last sentence. That was even better than the 'no way am i getting that 290 entry level stuff'.

New R9 290X's cost about 30% more than a 760 and absolutely destroy the 760 in performance. The part of the above statement that's true about it is that it will be louder. Because it's a beast.

Oh and Royal: you should do better searches. You can get a 290X for less than the 290 in your link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125499&cm_re=290x-_-14-125-499-_-Product

I'm actually getting the windforce version of the 760, and speaking of cases I'm getting the NZXT Phantom, how quiet are they?
