i7 4790k overheating, thermal paste not right?

Hello! I have an i7 4790k in a custom loop and im worried about my temperatures.

At idle it runs at around 32c which is quite high, apon running the prime 95 benchmark for around 10 minutes it reaches 80c. I have 1 360 and 1 240 on my loop so it should be plenty but my CPU still gets insanely hot. It is also the sr219 variant that is better for overclocking. If i try and make the boost clock 4.6ghz instead of 4.4 it reaches 100c instantly on p95. Ive tried reapplying thermal paste 3 times to no avail.

I believe that it may be the way or the amount of thermal paste i am applying. But my friend has an i7 4790k with a similar setup and gets similar temps to me, and we both apply thermal paste the same if that makes sense.

Any help will be greatful as i would like to overclock this CPU but currently can't push it past its base clock, any pictures i can provide! Thanks

Guys,

You took a left turn from the beginning of this thread. :D

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.5, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces extremely high temperatures. The FPU test in the...

I had a look at the paste before when i applied a small pea sized blob and it seemed to have burnt away or gone to the side, it may because of the clamping pressure but its designed to bottom out.

yes its set at 1.072v on the vcore, any other voltages i should be aware of?

that actually seems very low...

Yes, its a good chip on an ASUS maximus 7 hero. What cpu settings should i set in the bios if known because i am unaware of things on this board as i am new to it.

Intel recommends the "straight line" approach to the thermal paste for the 4790k, and you don't need much - just make it look like a grain of rice. I'll look for that link.

With a H100i, my 4790k is currently idling at 23* and I've only seen it get into the 40's just a few times.

Ive done the line method, but may have put to much on, but i put a small amount last time and got worse results so.., i may give that ago

I will get a picture, not sure if this helps but my GPU is running into my CPU in the loop but i know it doesnt really make a difference

The FPU test in the stability testing utility AIDA64 shows the same results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd and 4th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a 35% larger Die.

Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use only Real Temp to measure your Core temperatures, as it was designed specifically for Intel processors: Real Temp - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/real-temp-3-70/

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.5.

I ran the 26.6 version and hit 82c after about 1 minute... I've got my PC out so I can take a look at the paste and I will try and post some pictures although I'm not sure how on here..

Ive got my PC out from my desk and the side panel open, my CPU still reached 82c after a minute with p95 26.6, here are some pictures of the loop and cpu block.

Just had a look at the paste and towards the edges it seems okay, but in the middle its very thin and i can see the lettering on the CPU, its about 70% transparent, not sure why this is but i am using Gelid solutions paste so its a good paste..

I reapplied the thermal the thermal paste in a line, about a grain of rice and i am running p95 26.6 right now at 4.4 boost clock, my temps havent rose above 60c atm. 3 of them are around 60c right now and one of my cores is 50c which is kinda weird.

That's a lot better than 100C! Be sure that you always run Small FFT's for processor thermal testing.

So apparently you had two problems; wrong version of Prime 95 and thermal compound.

Good job! I think you should declare a thermal victory, partake in numerous, large overclocked beers, and enjoy your rig! :D
