Hi

I have 8gb RAM with no paging file because I thought I won't need it. After opening some apps, I got to 5GB and Windows warns me that my computer is low on memory and that I should close the highest memory consuming app and that is when I have 3GB which is not used. Any idea what makes this popup appears?

Thanks

In the past, I got 2 advices regarding computer's speed:
1) When you have enough RAM, there is no need to use a paging file because it slows things down.
2) If you do use it, never use a system managed one, because of 2 reasons: fragmentation of the file and the speed to manage this file by the OS.

System managed just means the size.
You can reduce it to 1GB, and have it both ways. No problems of not having a pagefile, and the pagefile not taking up a lot of space.

I understood that system managed file means the system keeps resizing it as it requires and it creates both fragmentation and slowness.

I'm not sure that this popup is because I don't have a paging file. It says nothing about it.

Reestablish the pagefile. See if it happens again.

You saw for yourself that messing with the pagefile can cause serious. Do not mess with it. Put it in the default OS HDD and the same partition. Set it to atleast equal amount as your RAM if you want to do it manually or leave it to "system managed", press OK and restart. I have seen numerous similar problem because they messed with the pagefile. Remember microsoft spends billions of dollar on windows to make it super stable at a wide range of situations. It does not make your system slow. Disabling or messing with it doesn't give you any significant performance boost, but makes your system very unstable. The only negative aspect of it is it occupies a bit of HDD space, but HDD's nowadays are large enough and thus it is hardly noticeable.
