Intel i7 4790K: Corsair H55 vs Cooler Master Hyper 212

I'm currently running my i7 4790K with the stock Intel cooling fan and it is getting to about 90-95°C whilst gaming, which I am told is too hot. I am therefore looking into upgrading my CPU cooling.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 X seems to get some good reviews online but I'm also considering buying a lower end liquid cooler instead, such as the Cooler Master Hydro Series H55. Obviously, the H55 is a bit more expensive than the Hyper 212. Would the the H55 cool my CPU much more than a standard air cooler like the Hyper 212 and would it be worth the extra money?

If you have any other suggestions then please say - my budget is about £45 ($70).
Also, I don't over-clock, but the CPU does use Intel Turbo Boost (up to 4.4GHz I think).

you gotta understand, until you get into the $100 most closed loop liquid coolers are far inferior to similar priced air coolers. And while the hyper 212 is cheap, it's also the standard for price/performance for ALL cpu coolers. You'd have to pay 50-60 just to find a air cooler that can reliably and noticeably beat it.

the cheapest closed loop water cooler i'd advise someone to buy over a hyper 212 is probably a corsair h80i. of course that's a $90 cooler.


and no, a h55 won't out perform a hyper 212... even if there is a review site that claimed it does we'd be talking about maybe a degree or two, which isn't worth the $$ difference.

It's worth the extra $20 to get the better part now, and save your self the time and headache of upgrading in the near future. Just get the H80i or H100i and you'll be MUCH happier in the long run. They perform great and you won't need to replace them for a very long time.

Thanks, I think I will go with the Hyper 212 then :)

The hyper 212 comes with thermal paste, should I just use that stock paste or would you recommend buying a better thermal paste? Does it even make much of a difference?

the thermal paste doesnt really matter. From the worst to the best you might see 5c differance. I have never used any after market paste myself as I have never needed or felt the need to.
