I have an old desktop (motherboard is MSI K9N SLI platinum; cpu dual core Athlon 64). My graphics card (pci-e 1.0 x 16 sapphire xpro1600) just blew up. Eventually I'd look to replace this system but for now I just want a new graphics card and then I'd use the new graphics card when I build a new system sometime later this year. I realize most modern graphics card would bottleneck my system as my cpu and motherboard are old school, I'm not so worried about that for now, mostly want to get my data on my hard drive as I don't want to lose it.

The specs on my motherboard are here:

I'm not super tech savy...I've read that 2.0 or 3.0 pci-e graphics cards are backwards compatible but that there's also exceptions...anyone have any idea if my motherboard would accept it? Any graphics card suggestions in my situation? My PSU is 485W (Noisetaker II) Thanks in advance....

Ah, I had a card like that, I had the 1300 though which was even worse. With a 485 watt power supply, you are limited to a 260x,250x,750,or 750 ti, However, not all power supplies have a six plus two pin VGA power cable, If you do not have one, then you are limited to the 750, or the 750ti. I would hightly recommend spending the little bit more and getting the 750 ti if you are in this boat. If you do have a six plus teo pin VGA cable, then it comes down to the 750ti, or the 260x, in which, I might recommend a 260x as they are slightly cheaper, and just as capable.

Even if a Power Supply does not have those connectors... you can easily pick up an adapter that will work.

If that psu is decent, (judging from the reviews and the fact that the old thing still works, its a nice unit) he could easily get a gtx 970(nvidia recommends 500 watts). Technically, a new card should work but there is no way to know for sure. If I were you, I would just grab a used 8800 gts and wait to choose a card until you build a new machine. The 8800 gts is dirt cheap and a hell of a lot better than your old card.

Actually, the 8800GTS-512 was better than the GTX version and was cheaper... I remember when I bought that card.. it did kick some butt... I have that as my spare/backup card in case my current card ever goes out.
