I am planning on making a brand new pc for around 750 dollars and this is my my budget for a cpu. I am wondering what the best cpu would be. I was going to go with the FX-8350 but I heard that the AM3+ line is basically dead. Intel is more expensive for less cores and I'm not sure what their upgrade path is going to be either.

Yeah I would say the i5-4690K is the best option for you. A little bit over budget but a CPU is more important to splash out cash on anyway. A better GPU is great but upgrading a CPU means upgrading the motherboard + the CPU in a lot of cases so it is better to get a CPU that is of very good quality and performance so you don't have to upgrade is quite as soon. I made that mistake when I built my PC. Bought and i5-3350P and now am stuck with a lower FPS for simulator games which I love to play with a great GPU which is not utilised enough for what it cost as opposed to the CPU which is underpowered.

No game truly uses 8 cores. Intel's quad core CPUs have been benchmarked to consistently perform just as well or better in games than the FX-8350. The less CPU demanding the game the more similar the performance will be. The more CPU demanding the game the better it will perform with an Intel CPU.

Alien Isolation is an example of a game that is not very CPU demanding so the performance between the AMD FX-8350 and one of the quad core Intel Core i5 CPUs is not very large.

On the other hand, Far Cry 4 is an example of a game that is dependent on the CPU so the FX-8350 does not provide performance that is close to any of the Core i5 CPUs. Even the dual core Core i3-3220 provides better performance.

Even when the FX-8350 is overclocked to 4.5GHz it cannot beat the Core i7-4770k that is underclocked to only 2.5GHz.
