Windows 8 won't boot properly

I have a Gateway laptop that is running Windows 8. It was running ok until the most recent updates were installed. Now the Gateway logo shows when turned on then I just get a black screen with the cursor. I can move the cursor and all the functions seem to work. The volume can be turned up and down (no sound), the brightness can be changed, the mouse pad can be turned on and off, and the monitor can be changed from the laptop screen to an external monitor. I don't have a recovery disk nor a back-up disk. Can anybody give me a suggestion to try to resolve this problem, if there is one? Thank you for any help you can give me.

The website takes you through the complete process - the bootable flash drive and/or DVD will allow you to boot to the DVD and attempt to repair it.
