I have a WD hard drive i tool out of an old laptop. I have been trying to connect it with a USB adapter I have but windows does not recognize it. It shows up in disk manager but the initialize disk option is grayed out. The hard drive works fine when i plug it in to a SATA port but as soon as i try the adapter it wont let me do anything. I have windows 8.1 and the adapter and USB ports all work. Is there any way to make this work off of the adapter?

Tried looking but there don't seem to be any drivers available. Windows says drivers are up to date for the device. The adapter is an oasis desktop 1697P which i took out of an external WD elements drive, and the hard drive i am trying to connect to is a 2.5 inch WD Scorpio Black. I have connected with the same configuration to a friends laptop a while back with no problems i just don't know why its not working now. I have tried formatting it to fat32 but still no luck. Whenever i try to initialize the disk windows says access denied and then the option goes grey.

Hey there, alexvnsc!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues about your WD drive. Can you please tell me the model of that drive? Is it internal and what do you use as enclosure/dock station to connect the drive via USB? I'd suggest to try updating the firmware, though I'm not sure it will work as well. Here's a link about where to find software, utilities, firmware updates, and drivers for OLDER Western Digital products: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=6Ox2eZ

Keep me posted!

I ended up getting it to work but it took buying a 2.5 inch drive adapter. This is the adapter I purchased http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_202&item_id=071324.

Once I plugged it in the drive initialized and I formatted it to a basic disk and it worked! I tried using it with the old adapter and that worked too!
The problem must have been the drive format. Once it was formatted properly it worded just fine. It turns out drivers weren't the issue.

Thank you guys for your help!
