I"ve got info that could be helpful. I just recently upgraded from a GTX 690 to 970 SLI. I was also using a 2560 X 1440p monitor. I play BF4, Metro, Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite, ect. These games ran fine w/ maxed out in-game settings w/ my 3930k and 690. However, all of these games had a common problem that was cropping up exiting games, I would have a Windows 7 dialog box informing me I'd run out of VRAM resources and Aero mode had to switch to Windows Basic theme. I could confirm this by recording a logfile in GPU-Z which would indicate basically all 2048MB of VRAM per GPU was being used in game, caused the Aero mode shutoff. Back to your question though, yes a 690 is going to be faster than a single 970 as shown in some 970 reviews/current games. Going forward though, VRAM is going to be a bottleneck w/ upcoming titles.
