Hi all,

I'm using a 256gb SSD for windows and system, but I also have a 120gb SSD that I'd like to use to cache my most frequently used files from my older physical drives. I have several drives (1tb, 2-2tb, 2-4tb +) that I use regularly, and since I just built a speedy new pc, I want to configure it to take advantage of every option I can.

Can Intel Rapid Storage (or is it Rapid Start?) Tech be configured to cache just the most used files from these HDDS, or will it automatically want to take over the system/OS functions that are being handled already by a faster SSD? I'm open to other options to speed things up, as well.

I use this system for everything from video/audio/photo editing, graphic design, video games, multimedia (audio books, music, Media Center DVR) and more. I also toyed around with the idea of running a RAID setup, but I don't have any identical drives, and the nagging thought of a virus wiping out my system and costing me invaluable family and personal history has kept me from taking the plunge. Perhaps there's an option I'm not aware of that would allow me to use an odd lot of drives, where I could just keep a 4tb drive offline with the most valuable of my files, too.

I've learned a lot from this community and appreciate the kind souls who're often very helpful! I'm pretty much a rookie to advanced drive options, so I hope you'll go easy on me if I've misunderstood something due to limited research and access to friends who're well informed.

Thanks in advance.

It is 'possible'...but...
That 120GB would be far better purposed to be just a target for commonly used files, or target space for your photo work.
When you set it up as an actual cache, you do not get to choose what goes on it.

I have an extra SSD, specifically for photo work. OS and applications live on a different SSD.

Using it as a cache for whatever ends up on the HDD is probably waaaaay more work than you want to do, for little actual gain.

Intel SRT will do what you want. During setup, you can pick which drive will be cached by the SSD, so yes it will only cache the HDD. It won't try to cache your existing SSD.

That said, it's limited to 64GB. So you'd be left with 56GB of free space on the 120GB SSD. And write caching needs to be turned on (otherwise writes go directly to the HDD and are as slow as a HDD), but adds additional risk of data loss if there should be a power failure just as you're writing files.

Between that and the added complexity of a caching system, I'd just follow USAFRet's advice and just use the 120GB SSD as your primary data drive. Install a backup program which regularly backs up your OS SSD and 120GB SSD to the HDD. Non-essential large files like movies can be permanently stored on the HDD. Then once a month you can backup everything to an external drive.
