Buying Windows 7 copy to upgrade it to W10 when it comes out, good or bad idea?

Well, I am not really keen on Windows 8/8.1, I've tried it on a few computers for a while, and it was quite frustrating for keyboard/mouse users, and I am not interested in taking the tour before W10.

So since I am skipping the Windows 8, and I've read that Windows 7 users will get a free pass to W10 too, I might as well buy Windows 7 and upgrade it to 10 when it comes out, but what's the catch? It doesn't make much sense that they would let everyone with 1/2 price OS to the NEW Windows 10 when it comes out.

Does anybody know more about this?

Absolutely nothing has been released about the upgrade other than it's going to be free for the first year.

So, no, no one knows any more about this.

According to MS (currently), anyone with a valid Windows 7 or 8.1 install will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 when it is finally released.

Key word, valid. There is no "1/2 price OS".

I'm not sure how much will they charge for new W10 copies, but I'm pretty sure that once they announce the release, they will also call a deadline, in which a previous Windows code has to be activated to be valid for this free upgrade offer. EDIT: It seems they have already sorted that out quite consumer friendly, by stating "...free upgrade...for qualified new or existing Windows...7"

I found this " We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year!* "

The * reads : . " ...Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. From current information, if you currently have a valid Windows 7 or 8.1 installation....you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free, within the first year after release.
Why did you mention "1/2 price OS" initially ?

Because currently I have neither of the OS'es in my possession. And buying W7 instead of W8 costs 50% less. But that doesn't make much sense, except if the W10 will have a low price tag. That's what I am trying to figure out. Should I buy W7 so I can later upgrade or wait for W10 release, because I don't want to get W7 and later get a gimped version of W10 because I upgraded from W7.

Not in any legal market, no, it doesn't. US prices, maybe a $10 difference, Win 8.1 being the cheaper. Not 50%.

But, according to MS, any legal, valid Win 7 or Win 8.1 OS can be upgraded to Windows 10 when it is actually released.

After the release of Windows 8, valid resellers cannot sell 'just the license key'. Per Microsoft licensing agreements.

Doesn't necessarily have to be from Microsoft alone. Amazon, Newegg, Microcenter...all authorized resellers.
