I'm new at building a computer. But I think I'm ready...

Right now I have an HP Pavilion p7-1446s It sucks for video editing. I just want to be able to view my HD videos very smoothly while editing, even when they're loaded with color correction effects and such. I also produce music and 8GB of RAM just doesn't do it sometimes when working on huge projects. I get a lot of "Ran Out Of Memory" errors. I was wondering if this set up would work - Keeping my 1TB hardrive, 2 x4 GB Kingston Memory, and case.

Here is the parts I've picked
I think these parts should work together right? I'm just not sure about the memory too much.

I have giftcards for Amazon so I'm trying to buy as much stuff as I can on there :) Also, I've edited with just an i7 and no graphics card and it performed exactly the way I want so I don't really see a need at the moment for getting a graphics card.

Solution
While everything is compatible, there are a few things that don't make sense.

An unlocked processor with the H-series chipset? The non-k version of the i7 turbos up to 4GHz, and costs less.

3 sticks of RAM. Are you planning on going to 24GB sometime down the road? If not, get 2 or 4 identical sticks to utilize dual channel.

Yeah, I'm just going to buy 2 identical 8GB sticks actually. I was thinking maybe I could save some money by using what I already have but I'll be giving the sticks away anyway.

But what do you mean by unlocked processor with H-series chipset?

I'm very much a noob when it comes to this. All I want is an i7 Processor. Which should I get exactly?

Few things:

1. You are getting an unlocked cpu ( "k" in the number means unlocked). It means your cpu is overclockable. However, you're buying a h97 motherboard which doesnt support overlocking. If you intend to get an unlocked cpu, upgrade to z-97 motherboard or get the non k cpu if you already have that motherboard. Or else its a waste of money.

2. You need an after market cooler with that cpu.

3. Using ram stick combination of that manner is not a good idea. 3 stick rams will run in single channel mode. So either use 2 slots or 4 slots for dual channel.
4. Buy either a western digital or seagate hard drive. They are around the same price.

Z-series chipsets are meant for overclocking. The "K" version of a processor means that it's overclockable. So when you buy a "K" processor, you buy a Z-series motherboard.

H-series chipsets do not support overclocking, so you'd buy a standard, non-K processor to go with it.

So you pair it like such...
(Z97 + i7 4790K)
(H97 + i7 4790)

Are you going to be overclocking?

Ah ok that makes sense.
Thanks! The only thing I'm unsure about is an after market cooler. How necessary is it? And what's a good cheap one that could get the job done?

Cooler master hyper 212 evo . Its goes for $25-$30.

Even if you don't intend to overlock that processor , it still runs pretty hot from what I've heard so it would be a good thing to get it and be future proofed if you decide to look into overclocking later down the road.

Oh ok. Makes sense. Thanks. Hmm I don't believe I have any plans to overclock if I understand that correctly. The i7 comes with a certain maximum speed and if I really wanted to, I could change the settings of it to run faster which is "overclocking"? If that's so. No, I have no plans to do that. So I should just get an i7 4790.

Correct. It'll save you some money, and has the same performance.

Yes thats what exactly it means. So get the non k if you arent over clocking.

You don't need after market cooler if you are switching to non k version of that cpu.
