Hey blackbirdm1. I'd suggest that you try connecting the drive internally via a SATA connection to see if the same thing happens. Also, what does it say about the drive's partition when you open Disk Management? Here's how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 to manage hard drives
If the partition is shown as "RAW" I'd recommend that you try accessing the drive via Linux Live USB/CD to see if you can recover your files this way.
