This is the laptop I was going to suggest to him as he was originally planning on an alienware. The program he will be running is solidworks and would also like it be able to do gaming. Now I more want advice with the software as it looks like it might be a bit more of a desktop workload. I might try and persuade him to get a cheaper laptop and get a desktop instead or a small form factor desktop but he wont be too keen on building it himself:/

Solution
As the official requirements of solidworks is,

a dual core processor is enough
above 4 or 6 gb ram is recommended
both you can get it in a gaming laptop. either Gigabyte or alienware is having it.

But problem is, they are asking for a NVidia Quadro series or ATI FireGL/FirePro series GPU's
its very rare in laptop.
you should sure get a desktop to put these type of graphics cards that are avail easily.

ofcourse there are "almost" equal powered gaming GPU's available alternative for Quadro cards but im not sure about its software compatibility.

can you give me some eg GPU's that your friends are using ?

That laptop can handle all heavy programing. its a nice configuration for gaming also.
but dont force your friend too much, if he can spend for alienware he can buy it as he like. it has its own advantages.

What i'm more worried about is the fact that the cpu on the alienware is a 2core with hyper threading where'as with the programing he would need a something quad core atleast an this one has that with hyperthreaing. do you have any experiance with that particular software?

He hasn't really got a clue about computers, I know a lot about components and I was looking at the requirments but I just find myself thinking that it will be much smoother with a better cpu. The gpu is a big problem though as you say I ont even think quadro or fire pro come in a laptop, I will see how he feels on a desktop.
