I'm looking to add two or four extra ethernet ports for hooking up wired ip cameras to a windows pc. is it as simple as fitting a generic NIC and downloading the drivers, or do i need to look for something specific?
thanks :)

What networking equipment do you have?

You don't connect the cameras directly to your computer, you connect them to a router or an Ethernet switch.

Here is what your setup should be:
Modem -> Router (you may have a combo modem/router) -> Ethernet switch -> PCs and Cameras connected to switch

If you don't have your Cameras and equipment here is what I use:
I use these cameras: http://www.amazon.com/HUACAM-HCV701-Megapixel-Outdoor-Camera/dp/B009ERANXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424707076&sr=8-1&keywords=HUACAM+701
I use this Ethernet switch, this is POE so the switch will send the power to the cameras over the Ethernet wire; thus the power for this switch is all you need...

I would suggest using iSpy or BlueIris for software. I use BlueIris, it is $50 but it is worth it.
