I was frustrated with slow connect speeds on my desktop replacement laptop -- I removed the intel n-130 wifi - pcie chip and ditched my w54g linksys router and got a asus rt ac66u router and updated to latest firmware.... (note that this is Asus RT-AC66U 1750)

I did a bit of research and swapped out the cruddy intel n-130 wifi that came with the laptop with the latest intel dual band 7260AC

MPCIEX_GEN_7260_AC_2x2_HMC_WIN7_64_AC:
"INTEL - NETWORKING 7260.HMWWB.R DUAL BAND WIRELESS AC 7260 2X2"

From my understanding,...the 'R' has something to do with a modification to the Bluetooth portion to make it more reliable or something like that.......

Anyhow I setup the asus rt-ac66u router as default so it has 2 SSID - "asus" 2.4G & "asud_5G" 5G - the router has most latest firmware installed.

But no matter how i set the computer 7260 wifi and intel proset wireless software or the router settings I cant ever connect to 5G. Most of the time I cant even see the SSID of the 5G mac -- and even when i used mixed mode (and attempt connect to anything) I never see any connections speeds above 300Mbs, most of the time its in the 144Mbs range (or lower) - even when literally 3 feet from the asus router. right now im about 8' from the router and only see the 2.4G SSID G/N network and am connected at 144.

trying to figure out what gives, do i need some sort of "dual band" internal antenna? or did i get jipped on this intel 7260 - that i bought online (perhaps its not genuine part??)? Is there some reason my network is crud -- this equipment (asus AC and intel AC) were supposed to be rated pretty good products but - its been total junk and im trying to figure out how to trouble shoot as i dont have another pc that has AC capability....

I can only imagine how difficult it would be for someone never doing this before, but Ive setup a ton of this type of things on different systems. my last system was with 2 wrt54g units running DD-WRT as wireless bridge - one of them connecting to a printer and media server, the other was the primary access point. and that worked ok on G.... but this AC thing is a total hoax or something as even with all this new equipment im either running on N or G and I cant even see the 5G wifi SSID.... ill try my smart TV later tonight and see if it sees the 5G (AC) network...

Does anyone have any suggestions or something i can look into ? what am i missing here...
better laptop antenna that supports dual band? I think ive thought of nearly everything - uninstalled and reinstalled latest intel pro-wireless for the 7260 device, but no AC whatsoever - once in a blue moon it sees "ASUS_5G" ssid - but if i try to connect to it - the computer says it fails and defaults back to the 2.4G "asus" SSID

- frustrated -- im probably just missing something but dont even know how to start debugging this .

Should i just junk the 66 and get the newer Asus RT-AC68U 1900 ???

Did you connect the wires to the new wireless card correctly? Did you have 2 wires or just one inside the laptop?

It's much more likely the issue lies with the laptop and new wireless card, than the router being faulty.

Good question, yes there were 2 wires, connected to snap-on connectors - now im sure im put them both back in the same orientation, but perhaps the new wifi card was different and i got the wires mixed up... guess i could try swapping them (and see if that makes a difference) - but I dont have any real documentation on the 7260...

I agree you would think even though its a slightly older asus AC router it should at least allow an AC connection. My 2.4G (N) seems ok - although only a few time have i seen 300Mbs connection, mostly its 144Mbs - with only me on the wireless network.

the only thing that bugs me is the version number of the 7260... from intels site ...
the 5A992C / 8517620050-NIC has several other part numbers listed ...

http://ark.intel.com/products/75439/Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-7260#@ordering
there are a variety of parts and I seem to have the "7260.HMWWB.R"
dont know what the other differences are if any....

7260.HMWG.R G141484 $21.00
7260.HMWGUX.R G141484 $21.00
7260.HMWGC.R G141484 $21.00
7260.HMWD.R G141484 $21.00
7260.HMWWB.R G141484 $21.00

But ill def play with the antenna wiring and see if things get better if i reverse the antenna cables....

For the antenna cables... the black one is 'primary' or #1, and the white one is secondary or #1

Yes there are a bunch of versions of the wireless card, but they should still work for you. I have the same one you do in my new little miniPC and it works fine.

Awesome.... so on mine I have a black and a grey the black one connects to port 1 and the grey to connector #2
It looks ok not sure where the black wire ultimately goes it looks like the cloth (?) pouch (?) thing is glued and dont want to yank at it.....so dont know what that means..... back to square 1 ? :-(
