deleted files from ext hd

I inadvertantly deleted lots of pics from an external hard drive. I have found the folders but not the files.
can anyone advise?

The most important thing: Do not try to write new information on the disk. Also don't move data from one folder to another.
It is better to keep the disk powered off as much as possible until you recover the information.
There are a lot of software for file recovery. One of the best free soft is Recuva.

hmmm, thanks for speedy answers.
I had already moved other files onto, then off it before I realised I had lost them. Since I realised my error, I have since recovered the folders but the pics are not in there, only a database file.
I don't think I'm going to be able to solve it tonight so can i safely unplug the ext hd and switch it off?
