Just purchased my first NAS (Synology DS214Play) which houses a pair of 3TB WD Red HDDs running SHR Raid. I am looking for suggestions on how to back this puppy up regularly. Not looking for anything fancy just cheap reliable dumb storage. Super fast transfer speeds are not necessary but then again I don't want a 3TB backup to take hours. Basically something that plays nice with Synology, is about the size or smaller than a DS214, and does not have any preloaded software or anything else. Not looking for the least expensive solution, just the best bang for my buck.

Well backing up 6TB of data is going to take hours regardless.

So to recap you have a total of 6TB of data that you need to back up. How often do you need it to back up, what kind of data is it?

There is no economic way of backing up that much data. You are going to need another hard drive array to hold 6tb of storage

Actually only has 3TB. The SHR RAID works just like a RAID 1 with 2 drives. -- 4TB eSATA will be the fastest and cheapest solution.

Because it's a RAID array, there's only 3TB that need to be backup up, not 6 TB. I'm looking for specific recommendations (enclosures, drives, etc), perhaps something that you personally use in your NAS setup and recommend. I'm not good when it comes to shopping for stuff I am unfamiliar with.

I would get a 4TB disk and a separate USB3 / eSATA enclosure. Something like a Vantec NexStar 3 will support 4TB disks according to the website.
