Windows 8.1: ASUS Realtek HD Audio Manager: Unable to Use Headset's Microphone

I have a headset plugged into a front panel jack on my rig, but Realtek doesn't recognize it as a headset and a microphone, and it will only let me choose from one or the other. Both work fine, but I can't use both. Solutions?

asus tech support is super at this sort of problem - and they're US based (indiana)

i had a similiar problem and it took re-installing the driver 3 times before it "took"

if you throw tech support a call, try to make it between 6:00AM and 12:00 noon, indiana time
