CPU TEMPS Jump to 70c then back down to 30c instantly

So, I have the i7 4790k and The temp stay around 30-50c when I'm just moderately using my PC.

But, When I Walk away from my computer and leave it idle for about 10 minutes, the CPU Temp will jump up to 70c within seconds and then instantly go back down to 35c.
mainly it stays within the 30s but should I be worried about this temp jump?

When I look at HWINFO64 I see the individual cores are a few degrees cooler/hotter than the main cpu reading.

Solution

Everything looks fine, Voltage, Bus speed, etc.

For now, if you wish, you can turn down the settings a bit in the windows power options. If you set the Maximum processor speed to 75%, it will not be as hot. That way you won't need to worry about it overheating while waiting for your new cooler.

Don't forget to turn it back to 100% though, otherwise you lose 25% of the performance.

What do you mean the CPU Temp jumps to 70c when you leave it idle? Does the CPU usage spike as well?

The individual cores are supposed to be cooler or hotter than main CPU reading.
The main CPU reading is on the motherboard, heat takes a while to transfer.

Im not sure if the CPU usage spike since Im away from my computer when it happens.
Basically, I walk away from my computer for about ten minutes with no programs running, then when I come back I look at the CPU temps in HW monitor and I see (current temp 30c / max temp 70c)
Which means that at some point the CPU went to 70c .

Run a benchmark or stress software to see if the Temperature of your CPU under load is 70C. If it is, there is a problem with the cooling.
70C is definitively not safe if left for a long time.

If under load your CPU does not go to 70C, it is probably a bug of the software reporting false spikes. Try a different monitoring software.

Stress test sends my Temps to 89c within seconds. I have the stock cooler.

So there is a problem with the cooling of your CPU. The 70C max was probably during a automatic scan of the Windows Defender Anti-Virus.
89C is very dangerous for a CPU, you should remove the cooler, re-apply thermal paste and reinstall it.

Also, is the fan on the stock cooler functioning?

Here are some screenshot 3 minutes into a benchmark. The temps went up to 80+

Does your CPU stock cooler look like this?

If its that small cooler, I don't think it is enough for such a powerful CPU. You should consider getting a heat-pipe based aftermarket heatsink and fan.

Thanks, I ordered the evo hyper 212.

Does anything in those readings look off to you ( besides the temps)?
I dont know what the voltages are supposed to be.

*What do you mean "70degC is not safe..."?

It absolutely is. Tjmax is 105degC.

The CM "EVO" is a good idea mainly to keep the NOISE down but there wasn't an issue with overheating.

(Spiking to 70degC is fine and expected with a stock cooler. You'll probably be under 50degC with the EVO. Make sure to setup FAN CONTROL software supplied by your motherboard from its support site)

Check the screenshots... A utilization of 88% with google chrome skyrockets his temps to 91C...
If it was doing FPU calculations at 100% it would easily go to 100C.
