I want to build a gaming pc with a Pentium G3258 AE that can run bf4 nicely. I will be playing on one monitor at 1280x1050 resolution. I have all peripherals and optical drive, hard drive and OS. I have a $800 Canadian budget. Also i was wondering if i wait till the summer will i save money or will the prices be generally the same?

Solution
That it is. The 8320 should last you a few more years but ideally you want an i5, even if it's locked. In compute intensive areas it will do a better job than the 8320 at maintaining a higher minimum fps, which is crucial if you're looking for the best gaming performance.

Right now it's a smarter move to go Intel if you want the most value for dollar when it comes to gaming. An alternative to the FX 6300 would be the Intel i3.

A dual core Pentium will struggle in Battlefield multiplayer. This setup should allow you to play around high to ultra settings and will allow for a more powerful GPU to be added later on, without having to worry about being bottlenecked.

For ~$110 more I would definitely look into a 1080p monitor.

Prices will vary since there are sales all the time... you could buy now and not have to worry about it being cheaper or more expensive later on. It will should be around the same price.

If i over clock the pentium will it not be better than the i3? The whole reason i want the pentium is that i want to try overclocking, i have never done it before :p

Just from some benchmarks that i've seen, the pentium performs very well for its price. Also i really want to get into overclocking, thats why i want the pentium. However, you still think its not a good investment for gaming and learning?

For learning it's a good investment if you're on a budget... but your budget allows for a better CPU. Granted you won't be able to overclock with the locked i5 I posted, but even at stock speeds it will be a much better choice for a gaming rig. The benchmarks you looked at with the Pentium I'm guessing showcased games that can run well on a dual core CPU... for the single player of BF it would work great, but when it comes to games with CPU taxing situations (BF multiplayer) which require multiple cores to run well the dual core G3258 will struggle.

Ahh i see, well that takes a lot of the fun out of this now aha. What would you suggest to be the best 'cheapest' unclocked cpu to use. This way i can save up a bit more money. Also, i dont mind playing on medium settings, it doesnt have to be ultra, im not sure if that changes anything.

Well if you are interested in overclocking an AMD FX 6300 or FX 8320 are good CPUs when overclocked, although even then they may not meet the same performance as a locked Intel i5 in gaming. If you're buying used you could look around and see if you can find a cheap i5 2500k + matching Z68/Z77 motherboard. From Intel's 2nd to current gen i5 the performance increase in marginal. The 2500k, the second gen i5 from the Sandy Bridge architecture, makes up for it's lack of IPC (instructions per cycle) seen in the newer CPUs with its superior overclocking capabilities. It's what I have in my rig and with a Noctua NH-D15 it's sitting at 4.8 Ghz :D

But if buying new, you're best bet is getting a FX 6300 or FX 8320 and overclocking them with a decent aftermarket cooler. The current unlocked i5 from Haswell (fourth gen.) is the 4690k, but getting the right equipment to overclock it with will go over the budget/leave no room for a monitor. I can't recommend enough to upgrade from 1280x1024 to 1920x1080.

I was considering the fx series before with amd, however some people were saying that the am3+ is a dieing socket. With that being said, if i went for the fx 8320, would that last me a good amount of years so that i could continuing enjoying the bf series?
