So I have a Gateway desktop DX4300 (the older one from 2009) and I want to start using it for gaming. I was wondering if I could upgrade my graphics card and use it as a gaming computer, or is it too old? If it is possible, what kind of graphics cards could I possibly buy and install to my computer so I could play newer games that require more video RAM?

The best card you can use with the stock PSU, would be the GTX 750 Ti. The fastest of the GTX 750 Ti cards that do not require a PCIe 6 pin power cable would be this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28N5458

Of course, they are not in the same class as the GTX 750 Ti. But still good for low resolution displays like yours.
