I've been reading a lot of reviews and there a lot of mixes reviews on xfx r9 280x and shappire dual x. I was initially going to get a gtx 960 because they seem really reliable but I kinda want better performance. I can't find a 280x for the same price as the gtx 960 though many claim they are.

I really just need suggestions on the best card I can get for about $250

Here's my list http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wFTbxr

The 280 and 280X are actually very similar chips. The 280X is slightly more powerful, as it has more cores and a sightly higher clock rate if I remember correctly. The 280 is more comparable to the 960, with the 280X being slightly better. The 290 I also listed is even higher performance than any of those cards. I personally think the difference between a 280 and a 280X may not...

Newegg has an R9 290 for $260 before rebates. It's out of stock right now, but it's a good deal to look for the best card around $250.

Otherwise, PCPartPicker lists R9 280's all the way down to $180. For example, this one goes for $190, or even $170 after rebates. There are definitely many of them under the price of most GTX 960's.

So my question is... What's the difference between a 280 and a 280x? Should I go with a 280 and save me some bucks? Or is the price difference worth it? The Gtx 960 by evga just seems like a cheap/reliable option that still performs very well. I wanted the xfx r9 280x but people say their RMA isn't good. I don't I'm just confused, this is my first build.

I personally think the difference between a 280 and a 280X may not be worth the extra money if you're tight for money, and otherwise the 290 at $260 is a great price and I'd say it's worth the price if it becomes available.

RMA on graphics cards really depends on the company you purchase from. EVGA does have a legendarily good reputation, but that does not mean other manufacturers are terrible. I've heard decent things about XFX and Sapphire, for example, although it really depends on who you ask. Most manufacturers have relatively decent support compared to other industries, though.
