Hi, I did a clean install of windows 8.1 pro on my Dell n5040 laptop, after failing to download windows updates i restarted the laptop. So after the blue windows logo the screen goes blank and only comes back if a change the display mode to extended.

Has anyone had this problem?
I have checked and all drivers seem to be up to date

Check if you've plugged your display into the graphics card or motherboard's output. I had the problem once and it was due to my computer outputting via the motherboard's built in graphics instead of my graphics card. You'll also want to check what the default display adapter is.

Likely not the issue, but it is worth checking.

Hi Kitsune34, Thanks for your reply my laptop only has an on board graphics. I've tried everything, i might have to reformat again and see how it goes there seems to be a mix up of drivers i think.

Hmm, see if you can boot into safe made or BIOS. If you are able to, then try safe mode with networking. Uninstall, then reinstall the driver, making sure to download the correct one from the hp website. It seems like the computer may be detecting a second display that isn't there/available and is trying to project to it by default.

I manage to fix it, there is a graphics option (Right click on your desktop), display output was set to extended so i changed to PC Screen Only that fixed the problem. :)

I was about to actually say that. Also if you do use extended make sure you have the right monitor as your main display. There is a check box in the same window that says "make this my main display." Make sure you have the screen you want to be your main display and click the check box. Hit apply and all should be good. To make sure you have the correct screen just click on it and make sure the name of it is right.

EDIT: I use an extra monitor on my laptop all the time. How old is the laptop?
