system specs =
i7 2011 3930k
evga 680 gtx 4gig vid card
new mobo = msi gd45 plus (asus sabertooth x79 died and i rma'd it and it came back with bent cpu socket pins)
tried 2 different brands of ram ddr3 = corsair dominator 8x8gig set(replacement set from corsair) and g.skill 2x4gig set
farthest i got for install from disc was 70%

and i already replaced the optical drive...was asus before, now on lite-on optical drive.
tried 3 different sizes of seagate hdds 500gig, 1.5tb, 3tb, and also a samsung 850 pro 128gig ssd. been stuck on this for 2-3 months now. after checking various web sites and even youtube. i feel like i'm replacing the whole pc part by part to get this working again. i keep getting some sort of error(not all the same ones) on the install..then it tells me to reboot and try again or check install files. machine is capable for usb boot so i could dl an iso if i can find one, current ms website offers are for making boot usb from windows 7 machines but not this one..which is xp.
i have sources to find clean copy of 8.1 pro or some all in one release version..but wondering if it will accept my legal key and install properly(hacked versions use mbr sectoring of hds..no hd over 2tb allowed or the os crashes) so i can use my 3tb hds for storage. been putting off the idea of rebending the asus mobo socket pins back in place for a yr now.

Hi,

I had tons of problem installing from disk, depending on systems / laptop.
My best bet is always to install from usb key. It always works better for me

great little guide here :http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/install-windows-8-usb.htm

should be interesting if it works...current pc i'm on is 32bit xp sp3
(had win 7 on it 2yrs ago but bro's stupid idea was to purge it for xp while swapping out the nvidia 260 for a nvidia 610)
anything i don't use that came with my parts...my bro grabs up...i don't know why he does that...he still makes good money. the g.skill i had to ask for back from him. msi is a bit freaky with g.skill, i had to manually config the speed and timings for it, not use spd.

it was full retail install disc set...came with both 32bit and 64bit discs. the pc i'm trying to get working again is a 64bit system.
i had to get it instead of the windows 7 cause i wanted 64gig ram support on it and couldn't afford the pro version of windows 7.
the basic full install version of windows 8 supports 128gig.

At this point, I have zero idea of what you are actually trying to do.

Install 8.1 fresh?
Update something?
With what media?
None of the above?

Unknown.

oh one other thing. i need to strip a 3tb hdd of mbr formatting to use gpt formatting for various hds, my bro decided to set them up in mbr via seatools or disc wizard(this pc i'm chatting via is the only 32bit pc between me and him, rest are 64bit), and he puts my new 3tb hds into mbr instead of gpt.
wondering if i need that same util to reset those hds to factory fresh status.

seems like most of my problems are because new mobo for pc in question is uefi...it gets cranky about os versions and such..even when i switch it to legacy+uefi mode. i may have to reset to defualt and see if it still complains on install attempt. anyway..found an iso i had in storage..no idea if it's win 7 or win 8 . figured if i get it to install either, then hopefully upgrade it to the win 8 with the code i have.

another thought..i noticed something weird over the yrs. any pc u build can reflect your personal mojo ..if you are fine, then it's fine, if your feeling crappy, then it's crappy. no clue why...anyway when my asus build went to hell, i was in a really bad place. friend died in my house and i barely knew him and his mother was pain from hell..she worked/or still works for the city and she sicked everybody but the police on me(she hated her son but treated me like the enemy) when ever i tried any legal methods to avoid her after 30 day legal limit of her gettting her son's stuff from my house. i officially went broke that year.

If you're trying to take an old HDD, with an existing OS, and attach it to a new motherboard....YES, often it will fail
New OS install is required.

ok, tried both disc and usb stick installs with 7 pro oem, 8.1 retail, even a hacked 7 black(i like the desktop images mostly when i had it installed on an old system). i still get errors, seems like theres communication problems between drives or stick when installing. trying to rma it via msi but the website is giving me issues, so i'll call them on monday. and explain all the crap i'm going thru. i can't even rma it back to newegg cause it's past the 30day period. been doing some research...found an intel made board but even that craps out after a yr according to a few online resources. last option if this don't work out is gigabyte. tempted to make a forum post asking for what is the most reliable x79 motherboard for this config.
if i have to get sabertooth again, i'm avoiding using the marvel chipset drive ports this time and use one of my old sata 2.0 drive cards for it.
