Im not looking for super performance. I just want to run skyrim on high and/or ultra with decent fps and not have fps lag on other games.

I'm here because im new to this and don't quite understand what i need to be looking at or what is good and what is necessary.

please let me know if im missing any important specs.

windows 7
intel core i5 cpu
4.gb ram
nvidia geforce 9500 GT

i'm looking to spend no more than say $200 atm. if something here is way behing please let me know a good alternative.

Thank you.

Horrible RAM and GPU. Your gpu is bottlenecking your CPU for sure. I would upgrade your ram and gpu. I would buy a $200 GPU and spend 40 more bucks for 4 more gigs of ram.

Thank you for replying to my probably non unique question. As i said im new at this. would you mind explaining why the geforce 9500 is bad? is it just because its old or is it known to have issues? does it just not fit in with the cpu?

The geforce 9500 has no issues with it working, its just that your CPU is very powerful. You have a very powerful i5 and a very low working 9500. So your cpu calculates stuff, and it waits for the gpu to catch up, slowing it down.

thank you very much for your answers. I was hoping you could help me one more time. How do i know what gpu goes well with my cpu. is it something i just have to google for suggestions? or when im looking at new ones is there some number i can look at on the packaging to determine it works at the same speed as my cpu?

You have an i5. I would recommend any gtx 960-970, and any r9 series.

Which i5?

the 750 2.67 ghz

The first gen i5s are getting on a bit now but they're still alright, it should be able to handle skyrim no problem

An extra 4gb ram and a new graphics card sounds like a solid plan. You can pick up a gtx 750ti for about $130, it would be a massive improvement over that 9500gt :)

yeah i was just doing some more research and started looking at the gtx 750. then i saw it was at the top of the "best value" ones on videocardbenchmark.net. im thinking thats what i am going to go with. do you think the ti is worth the extra 20-30 bucks? also if you dont mind being even more helpful, how many GB's do you think is necessary? 1? or 2?
