Looking for advice regarding CPU/motherboard

Hello everyone, long time reader - had to sign in today to get some recommendations from people.

First off - I've always wanted to have a decent gaming computer but I never really put any effort in it until now. Last night I caught a sale and grabbed an 850w power supply and a 960 card that I was going to hold onto - but I said eh, and on a whim put them into my current tower. Install went great and I'm pretty happy that I can already play more than I used to be able to - but there is one last issue that I'm going to need to deal with.

The motherboard that is in it right now is the MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine) with a AMD A10-5700 processor inside (4 core, 3.5ghz). Not the... best exactly. I can tell from the manufacteurer that it supports the following upgrades:

Trinity Dual-Core A4-5300
Trinity Dual-Core A6-5400K
Trinity Quad-Core A8-5500
Trinity Quad-Core A8-5600K
Trinity Quad-Core A10-5700
Trinity Quad-Core A10-5800K

But regardless - it's always better to go with Intel anyways, right? So it seems like I'll need to replace the motherboard to get a new processor in there too.

Any guidance or help on this would be greatly appreciated.

The A75 chipset is compatible with Athlon series. though since he has a FM2, not FM2+ board, OP can only get a 750K or 760K. It'll still be better for OC though. I do agree that if OP is willing to spend a few hundred, he can easily get a locked i5/H/Z97 combo, which is much better.

Yes , apart from the above processors you will need to upgrade the Motherboard for any other Intel based processor. But that depends on how much are you willing to spend and if you want a quick fix or looking long term.

For quick fix , i'd suggest getting a A-10 5800K and a CM hyper 212 evo and OCing the Processor to something around 4.3 MHz.

For long terms fix , there are plenty more options , but that depends on your budget.

I don't want to go crazy with this - hence why I bought the 960 instead of the 970. Altogether, I've been looking at motherboard combos on Tiger Direct and I've seen some nice generation 4 i5s that come with a motherboard for around 400 dollars. I wouldn't really want to go too much above 500 honestly if that can be helped.

Depends on your budget, gaming is demanding and even your motherboard is importent for
optimal performence. Intel is indeed perfect for such tasks but amd is for cheaper budgets awesome.
If your willing to get a Intel Core i5-4690K or even a i7 that comes with a price tag you also need a decent motherboard such as the Z97 MAXIMUS VII HERO.

Best bet would be to go with the A10-5800K or keep your current CPU. The 5800K will generate a fair amount of heat because of the extra GPU cores and the fact that it is unlocked. Honestly, I'd stay with your current CPU seeing as it is the second best you can get. Upgrading the CPU won't give you much more in terms of performance, since the most core count you can get is 4, and the frequency only increases slightly, but at the cost of more heat.

According the motherboard support site from HP, the list OP provided is the correct and only list of processors they can upgrade to.

Yes , you can go for that aswell. Something like Intel Core i5-4690 with a Gigabyte Z97-HD3 should be decent buy, altogether it"ll cost somewhere around 340 $ (USD)

I am not sure about Motherboard, atleast if your looking for RAID support, go for something like GIGABYTE GA-Z97-HD3 ,its the best you can get for under 100$.

If you can, I'd choose a motherboard with a 97 number for the chipset. Otherwise, that motherboard looks fine and the CPU looks like a great choice. Also, He does not need RAID. Nor does he need an SSD. They're extras that if OP wants to spend the money for, then they can, but doesn't need them for a base gaming computer. They're nice additions, but absolutely in no means necessary. Also, the OP needs a micro-atx motherboard, not full ATX.

Your correct raid isn't importent for gaming but I highly recommend a small ssd for the OS
