R9 280X or R9 290X?

I have an Asus R7 260X and I want to upgrade. Should I go for the 290x or the 280x? Obviously the 290x is better but if there is not a lot of difference between them I will go for the 280x to save some money. Also am I going to get much better performance with one of those 2 than my r7 260x? Is there going to be a difference? Finally if you have any other recommendations that are better (only AMD) for 200$-300$ tell me. Thanks in advance and if possible reply fast because on Sunday I'm selling my r7 260x and I want to have the new card by the end of the next week!

The R9 280x will last a good few years at the very least and is designed for 1080p gaming. Sapphire is a good graphics card brand although the 290 is the best card they make in my opinion!

The 280x is probably the best "1080p" gaming card at the moment. Meaning if you want to play games at 1080p/ 40fps+ then this is the best card for the money. The 290x was designed for higher resolution monitors at higher frame rates. If you have the money and power supply capable (750W minimum) then i would say go for the 290x otherwise the 280x is a good buy right now!

The thing is, games are getting more demanding and lately the r9 290 has been very close to the price of a 280x. Looking at benches of the latest AAA title released, the 280x may not even be the perfect 1080p card going forward anymore. Look at dying light benches: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/dying_light_vga_graphics_performance_review,8.html

Those benches were not even run at the highest settings, and once you do set the highest settings the game quickly eats up over 3gb of ram. So from now on I am recommending the r9 290 over the 280x. Games are only going to get more demanding, and use more video ram, so the r9 290 is better suited IMO. The r9 280x won't be handling max settings 1080p for much longer. Soon those users will have to lower settings where r9 290 users won't.

one thing i like to look at also is not only the psu need to be strong enugh to power the card but alos what kind or quility of the boards vrm's ? cause the board has to feed the pci-e slot as well so that 290x on a board that has 4+1 phase vrm may stress feeding the card compaired to a board with a 6-8-or12 phase [opinion]

Yes, the 290x is the obvious choice if you can get one for the same price of a 280x..... BUT not many people have a 750W power supply which is recommended for that card

I was talking about the r9 290 not the 290x first off. Then there is this: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_r9_290_review_benchmarks,10.html

No where near 750w required, not even for the 290x....

AMD themselves along with ALL the non reference card manufacturers recommend a minimum 750W PSU. While you could get away with less a 750W supply would give you some cushion as you DON'T want to be running it close to the bone

Running a sapphire r9 290 vapor-x at 1145 core and 1500 memory, max it pulls out of the wall is 550. Average during gaming is 450 watts with an i5 4670k at 4.2 ghz.
If you can find a 290x or 290 for the price of a 280 I highly recommend it. It'll last you a year or two longer performance wise.

Well dying light is one of the worst optimized games lately so I don't really care about those benchmarks. I want to know how long the r9 280x is going to last. Also is Sapphire a good GPU maker, because I have heard that its kinda cheap.
