Memory problems in command line

My memory not my RAM. Can anyone remind an ageing and failing memory how to put a v-bar into a Gnome Terminal. All I can remember is it's character 124 but Alt and 124 does nothing.

I really must use command line more often. Grateful thanks to anyone who can help out.

Thanks, fellows. I would try an onscreen keyboard but doubt it will be any different from my standard 102 key job. I can't strike the v-bar key using any combination because I only see the other two symbols that key shares.

Shift backslash does the trick so thanks, skittle.

I thought I'd tried evrery possible combination but to my eyesight, the pipe symbol had looked more like a colon on the / key. It seems quite clear now I know it's there.

I don't use command line much but I'm working on a customer's Ubuntu system. This stupid mistake has made a simple LAMP setup a two hour job.

Yeah, I've seen some keyboards where there's a break in the pipe symbol so I know where you're coming from.
