I made sure the ram was compatible Offtek 2x4GB RAM Memory for Toshiba Satellite L675-0GK (DDR3-10600) the ram will work with one of the old 2gb ram that the laptop came with and I've tried to update the bios but the win update program crashes so I don't know how to fix it please help

windows 7 64bit

I think that might be a misprint. Every other sub-model of L675 I've looked at shows only 6GB max supported RAM. But it's possible you're correct. Try installing both modules, removing both the main battery and power cable, pressing the power button for about a minute, reinstalling the power cable and battery and rebooting.

I tried it and it didn't work but if the l675-0gk can't handle 8gb then how does it detects the 8gb in the bios

For some reason windows is capping out at 6gb

You shouldn't need to set any amount, you should only need to tick the box. Empty any values in that box and un-tick the box, then select save and exit. Re-open and just tick the box, without manually entering any amount. It should automatically configure itself. Don't worry for now about what it says. Save the setting and reboot. See if it recognizes it now. If not, there may be a setting in the BIOS for allocating some of the RAM to the integrated graphics.

It's possible the system is reserving 2GB of RAM for the graphics adapter. Check your GPU properties and see how much RAM it says is allocated to graphics. You should be able to check this in windows and in the bios.

What I mean by it's only let 6gb is that when I install both 4gb it won't load Windows so I have to use one of the old 2gb and one of the new 4gb

Ok, I understand now. Does it work no matter WHICH of the 4GB modules you use, or does it only work with one module in particular? Is there still 6GB regardless of which 4GB module is used with the 2GB?

If not, then one of the modules is probably bad, or, for some reason it DOES only support 6GB so it can't recognize BOTH 4GB modules at the same time.

Right now you might want to focus on manually updating the BIOS. The firmware can be found at the following link. Follow these directions EXACTLY, and be sure to have the AC power cable connected and NOTHING ELSE connected to the laptop including wireless recievers for your mouse or external drives. After downloading the file to your desktop, right click the file and select "Run as Administrator". Failure to do so will likely result in the issues you first experienced when attempting to update.

BIOS file: http://support.toshiba.ca/support/isg/drivers/psk3ac/PSK3A_PSK3B_PSK3E_PSK3F_230-WIN.exe

You MUST have the AC Adapter connected to your notebook prior to updating the BIOS. Failure to do so, may cause damage to the notebook if the notebook loses power and fails to complete the update process.

In the event of a power loss during the BIOS update process and your notebook no longer works, you will need to have your computer serviced by a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider (ASP). For an ASP location, please visit the Service Locator on this site.

Toshiba recommends the following steps before updating the BIOS:
•The AC adaptor and AC cord must be plugged in.
•Disconnect all peripheral devices from your computer. Peripheral devices include, but are not limited to, docking devices (Desk Stations, port replicators), PCMCIA and CardBus cards, USB and IEEE 1394 devices, printers, scanners, digital cameras, etc.
•The notebook computer must NOT be attached to any type of docking device.

On some models, it is not unusual to see a CMOS checksum error when you first reboot the computer after installing the new BIOS. If you see this message on your screen, press the appropriate key as instructed to enter the CMOS settings. Save the CMOS data and you won't see the CMOS checksum error again.

BIOS update Instructions

Your notebook will have one of the following two methods of installing BIOS. All newer models will use the Windows Installation method. Some of our older models used the DOS floppy drive method.

Windows installation method

1.Download the Windows BIOS file from Toshiba support site.
2.Close all applications.
3.Double click on the Windows BIOS file and follow the instructions.

NOTE: On some models, you may need to run the BIOS as an Administrator. Right click on the BIOS file and select "Run as" or "Run as Administrator".
