[HELP] Computer randomly cuts out but when tries to boot back up it cuts out every 3 secs in a loop

Hey guys,

I have been having an issue with my computer recently and I am getting really worried.

The issue first came about a couple of weeks ago where my computer just cut out on it's own which immediately made me think it was a power cut, until then I realised that everything else was switched on apart from my computer.

Anyway, after the trip my computer booted itself back up again but immediately cut out again after like 2-3 seconds. It was then stuck in a cycle where it would boot for 2-3 seconds and then trip out again.

I rung my mate and he said to press the self test button on the PSU to see if that would work. So I took my case door off and pressed the button and it worked! It powered up again but I got a message on the screen saying something like "over clocking failed, press F1 to run set up".
I thought this was just a dodgy error because when ever I have tried overclocking my computer I have reset the settings to default AGES ago.

Anyway I restarted the computer and it was working fine. Yesterday it did it again twice in one hour. So now I am worried it is getting worse.

Please can someone shine some light on this. Thank you.

My specs are as follows,

CPU: i7 3770k
GPU: MSI GTX 980
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengence 1600mhz
PSU: Corsair AX860i
MotherBoard: ASUS p8z77-v pro
COOLER: noctua nh-d14
CASE: Areocool xpredator x3
DRIVES: 1x Corsair SSD
1 x Barracuda 3TB HDD
1 x Seagate 500GB

I am currently at my workplace at the moment. I will as soon as I am home this afternoon.

What do you suspect?

It could be overly aggressive CPU settings, or possible a power-failure feature that's bothering you. It's hard to know without knowing whats enabled or disabled in your BIOS :)

I'm not certain that this is it. It could also be any of the following:
- Badly installed components (attempt fix by reseating all components)
- Power failure - PSU related (attempt diagnosis by metering out if the PSU performs as it should)
- Short circuits on motherboard (fix by replacing)

But I would like to rule out BIOS first :)

Would overheating be a possibility? I am worried it could be that.

I will get you the BIOS settings for you as soon as I am in back home. Which settings do you wish to know?

You could check overheating by observing your temperatures in BIOS (this will be idle temp, but we cannot stress test as your PC is unstable already). They're usually found under "Monitoring" or the like.

Basically everything related to voltages, clock speeds (frequencies) and multipliers. What you find in AI Tweaker and Advanced, probably :)

Ok I will post that for you later.

I can't understand why it has started happening. I haven't changed any settings in the bios at all. Anything I did change has been restored to default. I have 4x4gb ram sticks to make 16gb ram but had to desink 2 stick in order for my cooler to fit on the motherboard. Would that mean anything?

So you pulled the heatsinks off of your RAM? That could indeed have an impact, but I am not sure that it would cause them to overheat. It would depend on their proximity to each other and the airflow in that area. Or you made a mistake while modifying them, causing a short circuit.

What happens if you pull out the two sticks of RAM that you have modified?

And while we're at hardware: Are you sure everything is seated properly? Such simple actions as reseating components have often worked wonders on PCs I have tinkered with in the past.

Guys I managed to fix my issue.

I stripped everything down and unplugged all drives and even swapped the PSU. Still no luck!

The issue got worse Friday Night/Saturday morning as the computer would power up, cut out then power up with displaying nothing on the monitor at all no matter what I did.

I tried many different things including another cpu fan, different RAM sticks and another drive with windows OS on it but still no luck. I nearly gave up believing my motherboard was faulty but I had one last thing to try.

I put everything back together as it were originally in my rig and then cleared the CMOS by taking out the CMOS battery for 5-10 min and then putting back in.

I then got a sign of life on my monitor saying that bios needs to run set up.

Success! It booted up as normal and I was back on windows!

Thank you all for your advice and contribution I really appreciate it!

EDIT>>>> Problem has occurred again! After reading other threads it is a "overclocking failed press F1 to enter setup" issue.
Anyone else had this issue?
