I have an old i5 760 with a stock cooler and it gets really hot in gaming (98-100c) while utilization is around 70-80%.I plan to get a custom cooler but until then i want to do something else to cool it down. How much would changing the termal paste help?

yes. i also did a stress test in realtemp while utilization was around 30% (it was supposed to be 100%)the temperatures spiked to +95 whic i thought was a little strange compared to what it does in gaming

I removed the cooler, the paste was kinda dry, i tried rubbing it with a finger and it didnt move or anyrhing just a litttle bit rubbed off on my finger. Im assuming this is bad but im not sure since i dint really know how thermal paste is supposed to act

just a quick update if anyone with the same problem will ever look here, i replaced the paste today, cleaned the old paste off with some aceton on toilette paper and removed a bit of dust from the cooler, i bought a cheaper paste and applied a little circle at the middle of the cpu.The temparatures are drasticly better. on idle they are around 25C in battlefield 4 they do not go over 55C and while stress testing at 100% they do not go over 59C, before they were getting to a 100C with 70% load
