Currently picking components for a friend who wants a new gaming pc, here's what I've got so far:

  • Mobo: MSI B85-G43 Gaming
Processor: i5-4690 (Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO cooler)
    Videocard: MSI R9 290
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
    RAM: Crucial 8GB DDR3
    PSU: Cooler Master B500

The thing here is that this is currently about 250$ underneath his budget, but I think this build will have all the power he needs out of a pc, since he only really plays games like WoW/LoL/CS:GO. I suppose with that 250$ I could upgrade to an i7 and a slightly more expensive video card, but I doubt if that will really make a noticeble difference in those games? Or I could add an SSD but personally I'm not a big fan of those since they're really expensive. So yeah... considering he only really plays the games mentioned earlier, would it be useless to spend 250$ more or should this be fine?

Thanks :)

an i7 would be pointless for a gaming build, better to stick with a less expensive i5.

Here's a few ways to spend that cash:
grab the 4690k (unlocked CPU) and a 212 evo so he can overclock.
If using the 4690k get a Z97 motherboard
Change that ram to G.Skill Sniper 2133 or 2400 mhz ram it's only a few bucks more
120GB SSD for the OS/Games
Different PSU (Antec, Seasonic, EVGA, XFX) you'll want about 650W for the 290.

All those above changes shouldn't amount to much maybe under $150(estimate), so he'd have $100 extra to get maybe a gaming mouse or headset.

This, or he could get a 290X or just keep the 290 as it'll perform great for his games and it's less expensive. But he'll only need a Z97 motherboard if he's getting the unlocked 4690k, if he's just using the 4690 (locked CPU) then get an H97 motherboard.

Also right :) I'd go for the 650W just to be safe

Change the motherboard to an H97 Pro4, and the GPU to a GTX 970. WoW tends to prefer Nvidia. The R9 290 will perform well, but the 970 will do even better. That PSU is most likely garbage. Seasonic, XFX, Antec, bronze rated or better. Evga B2 and G2 series are excellent as well.
