SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB OC GDDR5 Bios upgradeable/unlockable?

Will this card unlock the shaders to a 7970?

Can I flash SAPPHIRE HD 7970 3GB OC GDDR5 on my SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB OC GDDR5?

Or the 7970GE bios?

Or is there a better performing bios for this card available?

I believe, that yes you can flash it to the 7970 bios, however that does not unlock any shaders or cores or anything.

Bios flashing your 7950 however will allow for higher overclocking settings, like higher voltage to be able to push that core higher ;)
So depending how far your overclocking this card, then I would just stick with the stock bios. There is nothing to be unlocked with the 7970 bios. Only that the card will be overclocked further on 7970 levels.

  2. ...This is the bios I'm going to try.

Same subsystem number. It will bump the core and mem significantly. 925/1250 to 1000/1450
  3. OK, Results are as you stated Anonymouselite5 the clocks changed but the shaders remained locked.

Do you know when they started lasering them?

Link doesn't work for me, but I think they were actually made that way at launch. Looking around I can't find any way to unlock the card either. Nor people ever unlocking them.
So I'm guessing they were permanently locked from the 7950 launch.

People have got performance gains off flashing though (mostly due to higher clocks) however some people also got their card more stable at higher clocks with the 7970 bios.
