Who designed this software. I had a game minimised for the past hour or so. Went to go back in so I could quit and it's hung on a black screen. I can hear the music, see the cursor as it would appear in game, but the game has no picture. I can bring up the taskbar, metro UI, but the program I actually need, task manager so I can kill the game, won't come up. I just get a black screen. I remember when Borderlands messed up in a similar way, I was able to display the Task Manager after lots of messing around, but I can't do it now, because nothing works.

Task manager has Always on top ticked, but it's clearly not on top

It is an EA game, so that is most likely the cause, but I kind of have to bring up the competition again. If a program messes up on OSX messes up a lot of the time OSX will force kill it by itself, if the program is about to crash because of a resource management (e.g. about to hit RAM limitation), it brings it to your attention and give you the chance to kill it before it gets bad. If that doesn't work, in most cases Force Quit will kill it, but in some cases a forced reboot is the only way because it gets stuck. But Windows doesn't seem to do any of those steps. 7, from what I heard would be able to bring up Task Manager in cases like this (didn't game on 7 much), but 8.1 opens it behind the game which is no good. I think Bejeweled 3 is also open now, because I thought if another game can load and play, I can call up task manager properly and kill the hung game (which I haven't saved in the last hour D:). No joy though. I was able to get Borderlands to quit last time this happened (was the last game to do this), but forget how I did it (it was why I ticked the always on top option). Don't want to hit the power button yet, because there's other stuff open. Not even sure what game I wanted to play now

I've done it now though, had to navigate blind using keyboard only

ALT+Tab brings up the ALT+Tab menu, but soon as you let go the black screen comes back. I figured it out. I had to navigate Task Manager blind, using the Aero Peek think that comes up when you ALT+Tab and keyboard short cuts to kill it. Thankfully the context menu actually showed properly.

Hopefully 10 will actually have a way to deal with this properly. Why don't they treat Task Manager like the 360's Guide Menu. That thing shows on top of everything

EDIT: Always on top wasn't ticked
