I have a broken Dell N5050 laptop that cost me £500 less than 2 years ago. The hard drive connector and power supply are all sorts of broken and it's pretty much beyond repair for various reasons but the other parts are fine. I've considered just selling it as a broken laptop for a few quid but would it be possible to start building a cheap PC with the parts?

Solution
Your CPU and RAM won't carry over to a new build - laptop CPUs, GPUs, and RAM are made to run on a battery and won't work outside of the laptop casing. The only thing that *WILL* carry over to a new build is your hard drive - you can definitely pull that out and reuse it.

Are you talking those really small Mac mini-esque systems like the ones Asrock sells? Because mITX motherboards like Zotac sells only accept standard desktop DDR3.

I've never heard of ITX motherboards using SO-DIMMS before. That system in question is actually built with laptop parts so that's why it would accept laptop SO-DIMMs over desktop ones.
