what do you guys recommend currently , i am on the fence on buying either 2 gtx 970s , r9 295x2 or 2 r9 290x's , my cpu is a i7 4790k at 5 ghz , so i don't think bottleneck will be a issue.

forgot to mention , my psu is a supernova 850w g2... i would probabbly have to get a 1300w psu for that r9 295x2 to use it at 100 % overclocking potential

If it were me and those were my options, 2 970's, however better still is 2 980's. Even if you have to buy one now, and another down the road a single 980 will drive that config very well until you can add a second, just not on Ultra settings until you get the second card that is, which is a good compromise in my opinion.

Yeah, if I were in your shoes it wouldn't be a question, I'd keep the 980 I have and buy the exact same model to be the most compatible SLI. But it's up to you in the end, I mean you've already showed a willingness to SLI, so heat isn't a big issue where you're not trying to stick to a single card so why would 2 970's be more appealing than 2 980's other than cost, you were looking to take 500 for the 980 which is a full 4gb without a throttling effect, for 2 970's which kind of do with the 3.5gig vs 500mb stratification of the memory.

I would save up and get a second 980 in your shoes.

For 1440P you want as much VRAM as you can get.
I've got X2 R9 290's and @ 1440P, I am maxing every game.
I'd say go for R9 295X2 or Crossfire R9 290X's.
If GTX 970's didn't have the 3.5GB issue then I'd recommend em for 1440P.

60+ FPS. You won't hit 120FPS with any of these GPU combos. Not SLI GTX 970's, not Crossfire R9 290X's will be able to hit 120FPS (specially not @ 1440P). You'll be hitting 60+ FPS. That's about it.

It sounds like you have an ASUS ROG monitor, but there are very few cards which can drive that to it's maximum capacity, which is why I'm sticking with 1080p presently because for all the extra FPS offered the graphics cards are playing catch up to the monitor technology. By the time the GPU's catch up the monitors will be more reasonably priced.

I've mentioned this in other threads but 1440p is just on the bleeding edge at the moment, and that's at 60fps, it's in no way in any kind of a price to performance hotspot, let alone to drive a monitor that's 1440p 120 or 144 fps. The better the card the better the performance sure, but you're gonna be spending a lot of money to get there.

If you can hold out at 1080p in 2-3 years it will be worth another look at both monitors which will become more reasonable in pricing and GPU's able to drive them. Everything beyond that is a marketing money dump, at least at the moment.

I definitely disagree about 1440P being the bleeding edge. I'm gonna tell you from my own personal experience.
I have bought X2 GTX 780 Ti's when they first came out and my 1440P monitor on huge sale (only $300). Both GPUs drove a 1440P monitor great. On a side I had another build going with X2 R9 290's also got em for cheap (like, $275 each at that time it was very cheap). After about half a year I started noticing that 780 Ti's started having problems with being able to max games due to VRAM. I quickly sold em before price drop. I kept my X2 R9 290's and have never had an issue or played a game which I couldn't max with the 290's @ 1440P.
Now you can get X2 R9 290's.. $245 a piece brand new XFX Double Dissipation and a 1440P monitor (QNIX 2710) for $330 which you can overclock to 120Hz. Total for both GPUs and a 1440P monitor is $820. That's the price of a single EVGA GTX 980 K|NGP|N. So if you ask me as of right now 1440P can be had for cheap. I'm never looking back @ 1080P. I would say, 4K is the bleeding edge.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant 1440p with anything above 60fps as the OP is looking for, that is still bleeding edge alongside 4k @60fps/htz. I mean you see how tough it is for him to choose a card that can drive 1440p above 60 as it is, in 2 years he will have a large selection that can do that, and in a single card scenario.

Let's also not forget 90% of gamers game on 1080p60 or less. So it is still a developing market. Then drop PC altogether and consider consoles who've only recently gone 1080p and @30fps at that. Plenty of happy console gamers playing on 60" HD TV's out there.

At the end of the day it's up to you how much money you're willing to sink in today for something that's going to be much cheaper and more widely available in even 1 year let alone 2.

I think, especially with the 4k market, few people will upgrade to that, enthusiasts. And like old CRT TV's will only upgrade to flat panel when the price is right and the market squeezes out demand for 1080p.

Think of it like this, if you have a 1080p monitor able to do 144 fps, is it better to buy a 970/980 to drive it to those high fps numbers at ultra or better to play 60fps @1440p? I think it depends on the game, and the gamer.

As the many have said 1440p @144hertz is bleedin edge over priced tech. I did my dream build about a month ago and when it came time for the screen options I had a couple choices: 1440p @60hertz with a gtx 980 or 1080p @144hertz. I had never actaully seen a 144hertz screen in person, but I gave it a show, because it was cheaper. I was truly blown away by the smoothness of 144hertz and would never go back below triple digit fps again. I have seen a 1440p screen before and yes they do look nice, but I don't have perfect eyesite and the fps is a much bigger difference to me. I will be getting a 1440p @144hertz when the gtx 980 drops price for my sli and same thing with the monitors.

Acer now has a 1440p 144hz IPS monitor that comes in at 5ms it's tempting because the price isn't completely insane, but I'll wait until there is more than one model like this to choose from.

PLus when gpu's drop price to drive that,
