Hello, this is another one of my Dell XPS questions, I was wandering what kind of power supply would work with the Dell XPS 8700. Since I am going to buy a Nvidia GTX 970 GPU, I will need a bigger power supply. The only thing I fear is that I might purchase a PSU with an incompatible connectour to the motherboard. Does anyone know a good PSU to use? Preferably an 850 Watt?

That is correct in a sense since really what happened about a decade ago is OEM's like Dell stopped using special connectors and are now using the ATX standard that everybody is using.

Anything that is a standard ATX Power source should work fine. I recommend the Corsiar CX750. This will give you a surplus of power connectors and will ensure headroom for light-card SLI or single card power.

So in other words, you're saying that most power supplies manufactured these days have a "universal" connectour for most motherboards?

I just swapped a Dell XPS 7100 motherboard out for an ASUS. All of the connectors were the same. Same main 24 pin plug for the MB. Same 4-pin plug for the CPU power. The only difference was that Dell uses unique positions on a connector for the power button, power LED, and HDD LED, but it wasn't difficult to adapt that to the standard pin headers on the ASUS.

The main thing you've got to worry about with a new power supply is making sure it will physically fit. Most power supplies are made for full ATX cases. The Dell is narrower.
