whilst my XP lasted well during it's life I stored my documents photos & personal files on an HP external hard drive . I now have a windows 7 ultimate & want to copy these files on to the computer. I only used the HP as a USB really. Now I can't find any way to copy them over the way I used to do Any suggestions

Hey nanmau. From what I understand you've used this external drive as for storage and you've copy-pasted the data instead of using backup software - right? If this is the case and if the drive is working properly, you should be able to access it and get your files. If on the other hand you've been using some sort of backup software, then I'd recommend that you use the same program to recover the data. Is the drive recognized in Disk Management? Here's how to access it: How to access Disk Management. Please let me know what it says about the partition. If the drive is not recognized, then I'd recommend that you try to access it via Linux Live USB/CD to see if you canget your files this way. If that doesn't work then you should try some of the data recovery options from this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
