Trying to wake an old laptop

I have an old Compaq laptop running Vista Home Premium and I'm trying to wake it up to see if it will still work as a replacement for my wife's creaking laptop. When I turn it on it gets into a loop of trying to configure update "stage 3 of 3: 0% complete" and then restarting. Can I do anything to force it to move on?

If you don't need anything off it just stick in a Windows CD. When you power up keep pressing Del (or whatever you need to press to get into your system bios) find where you boot order is and make sure you CD/DVD drive is top of the list. Save and reboot.

You will end up in Windows Setup. Just install and choose to delete/format all current partitions (this will wipe all your data!).

Once this has done just run through the Windows installation and there you go. Like new :)
