I currently have 8gb of ram. 2gb in 4 slots. i have two vacant slots. Computer will allow up to 24gb. Took one of the ram sticks with me to Fry's to get an 8gb stick thats compatible to get a total of 16gb. They gave me a patriot ddr3 8gb stick. I brought it home and installed it but havent had any luck. After i added it, system properties showed 6gb, so it went down by 2. Took all 4x2gb sticks out and only put in new 8gb stick. Powered it up and would just beep, wouldnt boot up. I checked to make sure it was seated correctly, and same result. According to patriot website, this stick is only compatible with a intel 2nd gen cpu. I'm thinking my i7-930 may be a first gen and thats why im having trouble?

You cannot add an 8 gig stick to your configuration.
You have 6 slots, your processor is capable of using 1,2 or 3 channels of memory. Each channel is 2 slots. Right now you are utilizing dual channel mode across 2 channels, 4 sticks of 2 gig each. Your maximum memory configuration is 6 slots x 4 gig for 24 gig total. You need to take the 8gig back and get 2 -4 gig sticks to put into the 3rd channel, or last 2 slots. You will then be running in triple channel mode. You need to buy memory that is the brand and type you already have in the system to minimize issues you cold run into with compatibility between the sticks.

Thank you for replying. I'm a beginner at this so please bare with me. I bought this computer new in 2010 and no one has ever opened it until now. When i take the side panel off, and am looking at the ram from left to right, there are six slots colored blue/black, blue/black, blue/back.The way its set up is 3 sticks in the blue slots, and one stick in the last black slot. Is each blue/black a channel? I'm guessing you don't want to have 2 different capacities on the same channel then, right? I took the patriot ram back and the tech guy told me that my CPU can only handle the PC3-8500, and the one they sold me was a PC3-10600. He also said that they don't sell PC3-8500 ram for desk tops anymore, but that i could find it online. It has Samsung ram in it from the factory, and I'm having trouble finding Samsung ram that's in 4gb sticks. I should probably start with all fresh ram from the same manufacturer and get 4x4g to get a 16g total, right? Crucial.com did a scan of my computer and it says i have 6 slots, two banks of three. It brought up a bunch of different kits that are compatible with my computer. However, these kits are PC3-12800, DDR3-1600. It says its compatible, but the guy at the store says i have to use PC3-8500. Who do I believe? Thanks for the advice.
