The gtx 970 does not seem sufficient and is morally tainted. The 980 is way overpriced. The 290x seems to be a reasonable value but is outdated, hot, and apparently somewhat unreliable. Have been tempted by all three, building a new machine with a 4460 and have a good 1440 monitor.

Is the only solutino to wait on the amd 300's? Looked at 7990 and some other offerings but they seem like misses. How is the gpu market so inept to not have any genuine solution to 1440 although its been around and should be the go to resolution. 4k is just overreaching at this point.

If you consider than "UltraMaxOhWOW!" settings are not required to enjoy good games, even a R9 280X will likely do well for you. Although I probably wouldn't exactly call the R9 290[X] "outdated," it is true that the 300 series is right around the corner, so it may be worth waiting a few weeks for that (and its initial reviews).

a 970 with its memory issue will have issues with higher res gaming although I don't believe that 1440 is a high enough res to create an issue with this. I personally would wait for the 300 series from amd for above 1080p gaming. HBM looks like a real game changer.

in all honesty a R9 280 will work for almost every game on the market on high to ultra settings as long as you are happy with 40 fps or so.

benchmarks show that a 290x is faster in 4k gaming due to memory bandwith and capaticy and the 970 is faster in 1080 due to faster gpu. its a trade off. btw 290x is cheaper.

If you can wait, I would wait for the 3xx cards, On the other hand they are going to be pricey like the 9xx series from NV.

Right now you can get two AMD 290's for 550 and the 2x295x for 680.. Nothing is going to beat these cards for price performance, you might have to wait several months.

Personally I wouldn't settle, wait it out. See what the new gpu's can do from AMD

$320? You can have an XFX DD R9 290 for $245 from newegg.

Rumors are R9 3XX series will be here this month. On the other hand.. I am still getting 60+ FPS in all of the games with X2 R9 290's (@ 1440P). So if you want to go a cheaper route than X2 290's is still a solid choice.

it has been said on wccftech that the new 370 and 380 will be refreshed versions of 280x and 290x. the new gpu will be the 390x which Is looking to be released in april and announced this month.

with that you could just get a 290x with a good cooler and OC it a little. the new 390x is supposedly faster than the 980 by a little bit but I would expect it to be a little more expensive as well :p

I doubt it will be more expensive but it will be faster specially with the new memory that they're using.

well since the 980 is $550 and most new cards from amd are about that price amd will say hey ours is faster so we can charge more and sell it for $600. just my guess. hell they could be $300 for all I know

I can't speak for or against other cards but I will say my Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 is adequate for 1440p. You can't run new graphics heavy games on max with 60fps but you will still be able to maintain 60fps with with medium or medium-high graphics. On most older games you should be able to max them out with good fps.

If you looking for >60fps on graphics heavy games you should probably look at a better performing card.

I'm totally fine with "adequate" @ 1440p if the price is right. But $360.00 ain't right.

Waiting to see where prices are for ALL cards after the R9 300 series has been out for a month or so.
