It depends. If you're using the older WEP encryption, then it doesn't matter how complicated your password is because it can be cracked in seconds to minutes (depending on how much traffic is passing through the wifi). If you're using WPA/WPA2, then the complexity of your password does matter. When authenticating, the password transmits over the air, but it's encrypted. To crack it, the wifi traffic is captured and then either brute-forced or the encrypted hash is compared to rainbow tables. When brute-forcing, the crack will occur depending on how complex your password is. When comparing the encrypted hash to rainbow tables, chances are your password has already been cracked if it's a common pass-phrase. So either way, you want to use a complicated string of characters (that you can remember) for your password to slow down the cracking time and change often so when it is cracked, it doesn't matter because it's no loner valid.

First and foremost anything is hackable, just ask Sony, Chase, Anthem, Home Depot, Target, etc.

For the average person (whether it be computers or physical security) the goal is not to make something impenetrable as that is not possible; the goal is to make it so that it requires too much skill to defeat the security and thus making the "bounty" not worth to the people with that advanced of skills. No one is going to dedicate $5000 in resources to obtain $500 worth of stuff.

Getting to the question at hand:
WPA 2 encryption while not unhackable requires an excessive amount of resources to crack, way more then anyone just wanting free wifi will have.
Making your password something difficult with at least 3 out of the 4 of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special characters will make it nearly too difficult to crack.
WEP encryption on the other hand, you can defeat this with something as low powered as a smartphone in a short amount of time.

As stated by others, using the default username/password is very easy to crack as any wannabe hacker knows these passwords, so changing it from default is highly highly advised.

Now you should disable WPS on your router, that is very very easy to use to bypass your security.
