So I have decided to upgrade to windows 8 and I have gotten tired of re-installing all my programs every time i format/upgrade windows. I've decided to back up my important files (drivers, music etc.) Would windows create a windows.old and if so what files would it contain, ex. utorrent downloads, downloads etc.
What is the best way to go about this, my windows easy transfer file comes out to roughly 40gb and i only have a 8gb usb. Is there any ultimate compression file that i can use. or is there anyway to create a hard drive partition then transfer the files over, once im finished that delete the extra partition?

Solution
For a new OS installation, you really, really need to reinstall your applications.

Depending on the specific selections you make during the 'upgrade', and what OS you are coming from, pplications/setting/files may be seamlessly recreated in the new OS.

However, it is ALWAYS advisable to have any critical data saved elsewhere and offline, just in case. One wrong checkbox, and all is gone.

I've decded to create a backup partition, do you know how i could do so, and if i could regain the space the partition took. ex. hard drive c:200gb backup :25gb. could i regain the gbs, so its c:225gb

Can you burn your files to DVD or back them up to an external hard drive?. If not, you can use a free cloud hosting service to upload your files to and then re-download them after you've did your re-installation of Windows. Of course, it may take a little time to upload if your internet is slow, but well worth it in the long run.

A backup partition is NOT what you are looking for.
You want to just save your personal files elsewhere and offline during the process.
As said...often an 'upgrade from one OS to the newer version works.. But not always.

What are you changing from?
