Hi there,

I'm looking to get a new CPU for my rig that can handle some serious 3D renders. I'm tired of waiting hours to see bad results.

I've been looking at this: http://
It looks relatively cheap and powerful but does it match up to an i7 4790k?
Have you used it in any 3d applications (gaming doesn't count)?
Can you recommend a board to go with it?

My current build:
1TB HDD
256gb SSD
Intel i3 2330 (eh)
GTX 770
750w corsair

You cannot overclock that Xeon so don't get it, the 4790K will be far faster.

1. No, because of the clock speed, but it's close enough. A better approximation would be the 4790 (non-K), or the 4770k stock.
2. No
3. Any H97 should work.

Other options are i7 4790K (obviously) or i7 5820K (which has another 2 execution cores)

What applications are you using?

You could conceivably mod the 770 into a K5000 as well, which would definitely help with the CUDA accelerated stuff.

@nord

I believe that should be a multiply, not a plus, and it's not the best to put a hyphen in i7 either. Sorry if I'm too pedantic.

Well, no, that'll be the 1230v3. 1231 is Haswell refresh and requires a BIOS update.

I'll be honest I'm not much of an overlocker, I just find it to be time consuming and not very rewarding. I probably should've mentioned that my budget for the CPU is ~400

I am using Autocad's Maya 2014 and Cinema 4d R15 as well as After Effects and Premiere Pro
The reason I wanted the Xeon is because they are more suited for server work and can take a lot more heat, I read somewhere that some guy was running it at 70°c. Plus they don't come with iGPU which is a waste of money considering I already have the 770.

I also saw this one: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-5820K-Haswell-E-Processor-BX80648I75820K/dp/B00MMLXIKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425143068&sr=8-1&keywords=i7+6+core

Thank you all for your time.

Yes, the 5820K is a better choice, simply because of its 2 extra cores. (and if you lived near a microcenter it'll be even better, because they're selling it $299 in store.). You do have to spend more for the MB and RAM though.

The e3-1231v3 is awesome and it's performance would be almost identical to the 4770. I would pair it with a H97 motherboard. You did not mention your budget, but of course the 4790k would be better.

Which model Corsair do you have?

Microcenter always tends to sell things cheap in store. Any way, I'd suggest you get 4x4(16GB) if you go X99, to take advantage of quad channel. 3D renders tend to take up RAM too.

Thank you all again for your help,

Ya I don't know about X99, I found one for $150 but DDr4 is ridiculously pricey. Are there any 6 core CPUs that fall below $500 and aren't x99? Unfortunately there are no microcenters around me. Maybe I'll have to settle for the 1231V3.
