AMD driver wrong detection

I have a laptop graphic card RADEON HD 6470M and have a "display driver stopped working and has recovered" problem since days ago.

After searching for help everywhere on solving that problem, I noticed that the driver installed for me was HD 7400M series (driver downloaded from AMD website), which my friend said is a cause for the problem mentioned above.

Even if I uninstalled the driver and disabled windows update, it still will update the driver itself into HD 7400M series...

So, how can I install HD 6400M series driver on my laptop while the installer itself keeps installing HD 7400M series for me?

The HD 7400M is the same as the HD 6000M series its just a rebranded GPU. Rebranding is quite common with AMD GPUs.

If the error occurred after you installed a new driver it could be a problem with the driver but if that is not the case then its more likely that its a faulty GPU and not the driver.
You could try searching for an older version of the driver I'm sure its on the AMD Catalyst web site.

sorry for late reply, i was downloading and installing 13.12 driver, but it still install 7400M series for me.

for now, i have disabled the driver and using microsoft's driver.

i actually tried to select the driver manually from the AMD's website but still, no matter what i done, the installer will still install 7400M series for me.

well since the 7400m cards are the same old 6470m cards with a newer name, it most likely shoudn't matter if the driver detects the card to be the newer version. Same sort of things happen with other cards as well, for example some 7900 desktop cards get detected as r9 280 series...

what kind of temps do you get on the gpu? Do you get the error message just idling on the desktop or playing games?

what does gpu-z report?

well, the info gpu-z shows matches the specs of the 6470m, the clocks seem right as well. I was just wondering that maybe the newer driver had higher clocks or something that would cause instability. (If anything the 3d ram clocks are lower than usuall for a 7400m, several sources list it as 900MHz. But this shouldn't cause problems)

Some amd cards had flickering when the ram dropped down to the idle clocks, people fixed it by manually creating 2d-clock profiles using Afterburner with slighly higher ram clocks... But if the card was fine before i doubt this will fix it.
