I'm considering getting a Xonar Essence STX to amp/enhance the Beyerdynamic DT-150's I plan on getting in the near future.

More info:

Cans are 250ohms.
ASROCK Z87extreme3 mobo
Powerex Black Hawk 650W PSU
Zalman 5-fan case

Will it fit? Can I keep the same PSU?

Bonus question: If I get a GTX970 or 980 down the line, will that work in place of my GTX760 too?

Thank you kindly.

Yes, both should fit no problem. Will it help with your new headphones? Perhaps, I wouldn't expect too much in terms of volume over what your currently have.

The soundcard is PCIe x1 and you have a slot for this. The graphics card fits in a x16 slot (like your current card) and the 760 only has one power connector, the 970 also only has one power connector (all the ones I looked up only has one connector). The only thing you would need to watch out for is the length of the graphics card.

Thanks for the info.

Not really looking for more volume, just a higher quality source than my onboard sound.

I think the length should be OK, as I have a 3 fan Windforce, which is quite long, but I'll be sure to check before buying.

I didn't want to say the Xonar had better quality as I never used the onboard sound you have. I use a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card and it was superior compared to my old motherboard sound. But my new motherboard sounds the same as the X-Fi so I just took it out and use the onboard sound.

However, considering you are buying some nice headphones I guess it would be silly to not get a good soundcard for them.
